MARJOLIJN THIE-TER BEEK
A Canadian Retrospective
Virtual Gallery: www.artisit.ca

Born and educated in the Netherlands, Marjolijn Thie-ter Beek immigrated to Canada as a young artist, where she continued her artistic training and development. Her journey can be traced from the late-60s with her arrival in Manitoba, through her mid-career in Ontario, to her mature years in Quebec. Initially Marjolijn drew heavily on the traditions of Dutch landscapes fused with the modern vibrancy of Europe’s CoBrA movement to create her visions of Canada’s figures, large skies, and immense prairies. After moving to Ottawa, Marjolijn’s practice evolved with productions that are not realistic, not expressionistic, nor abstract, but rather involve elements of all: lines, shapes, light, colours, emotions, and intuitions.

Following a hiatus in Switzerland from 1999-2005, Marjolijn settled in Quebec. Experiencing the vastness of the Northern landscapes, the dominance of the St. Lawrence River, the formations of the Laurentians and Gatineau Hills, and the region’s culture and history resulted in another shift in her painting style. Marjolijn eliminated details to bring out the beauty of natural shapes and lines. Over the course of her career, the originality and high impact of Marjolijn’s artworks have sparked a large number of exhibitions in Canada and internationally. She loves it that her paintings are hanging on walls all over the world.
